The BWB Blog Contest!

How I wish I had a pair of those giant scissors they use at ribbon cutting ceremonies right about now!

And a giant ribbon, of course.

Because this blog contest deserves the kind of fanfare that only giant desk accessories can provide.

We all know how hard it is in this biz. To keep writing when you’re discouraged, dejected, demoralized, and all those other d-words that seem inevitable as you make your way along the dusty trail toward publication.

But when you’re feeling down or, worse, when you feel like giving up, here's your saving grace: your BWB.

That’s right, your best writer-buddy.

Your BWB is there to offer you a swig from her canteen at high noon. And suck the rattlesnake venom out of your leg. And not turn you over to a posse of vigilantes just to collect the reward money. In other words, your BWB has got your back, and you’re going to thank your BWB someday when you write your Acknowledgements page because you have pep talks that go something like this:

You: *sigh* I suck.

BWB: You do not suck.

You: No, it’s true. I suck greatly.

BWB: You stop that talk this instant. And don’t use adverbs. They’re bad for you. *whip crack* Now get back to work!

If it wasn’t for your BWB talking you down every once in a while, who knows where you’d be?

Well, to celebrate BWB’s everywhere, a couple of my comrades—the lovely Renee Collins and equally lovely Angelina Hansen—and I have put together this awesome blog contest for writers of YA and MG fiction.

How to Enter: In the comment section, tell us briefly (in 100 words or less) about your best writer-buddy and how she/he inspires and encourages you. If applicable, include a link to your blog as well as your BWB’s blog. Again, this is for YA/MG fiction writers only, but you can write in any genre: Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Not-paranormal, Somewhat Paranormal – anything. **To leave a comment/entry, click on the post title and the comment box will appear below.**

To Qualify to Win: Be a blog follower of mine, Angelina’s or Renee's, simple as that. You probably already are a follower anyway. ‘Cause you’re cool like that.

Winners: Each of us will choose a winner at random from the entries at our blogs. And, yes, that means that you have not one but three chances to win. Because you can go over to Renee’s blog and follow her (if you don’t already) and then to Angelina’s blog (and follow her as well) and leave comments/entries there.

Wear it with pride!
Prizes: Winners at my and Renee’s blog will each receive a query critique from our fabulous agent, Molly Jaffa of Folio Literary Management. The winner at Angelina’s blog will win a query critique from her agent, Katie Grimm with Don Congdon Associates. And here’s the good part, not only will winners receive a query critique, your writer-buddy will receive a copy of Cheryl Klein’s new book Second Sight  AND both the winner and her writer-buddy will get one of these super cheesy, BFF half-a-heart pendants. Awwww!

I know, right?

Have you ever heard of more amazing amazingness?

Deadline: Entries must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 30 at midnight. Then we will announce the three winners the following week: one on Monday, 10/3; one on Wednesday, 10/5, and the final winner on Friday, 10/7.

I look forward to hearing your inspirational tales. And, yes, before you email to ask, you can absolutely write your entries in iambic pentameter.

Don't forget to click the post title to get the comment box to come up!

Awesome contest! What WOULD we do without those BWB's?
Me: *sigh* I suck.

KLM: You do not suck.

Me: No, it’s true. I suck greatly.

KLM: You stop that talk this instant. And don’t use adverbs. They’re bad for you. *whip crack* Now get back to work!

Did you cut and paste this from our email exchange earlier this week? :)

I'm not entering--I don't write YA alas, but I shall scurry over to my blog and Twitter and RT this.

Everyone needs a whip cracking pep talk once in a while. My day will come as well. Like probably later this week.

Also, be warned, I may upgrade from a whip to a gun soon. Just to increase your motivation.
I'm a YA author but am not entering officially because I have an agent and feel like I'm cheating.

But I want you to know about Kelly Breakey.

I've never met Kelly. Not in person. But we're virtual pals. One night, I was weepy and feeling just horrible about my work and ready to quit completely. I tweeted that and Kelly replied. "Stop. Let me read it."

I sent her what I thought was drivel. She read it and gave me much needed feedback. Mind you, it wasn't just "This is great!" fluff. It was helpful and corrective in places.

She infused light into a dark moment. Caught me before I fell. I ended up finishing that novel, queried a few dozen agents and a few months later, signed with one! The novel is currently out on submission.

Any success I have or will have can be traced back to that moment and Kelly's catch.

I just had to tell that story. :)

Someone get me my box of tissues! That was a lovely story. She sounds like a peach. A peach with a red editing pencil.

My BWB would be my cousin, best friend, and blog partner Pam Harris. We have been writing together since we were pre-teens. We would have our Lisa Frank notebooks, write one chapter--then read it out loud once we were finished. We wrote entire novels this way and critiqued each other without even realizing we were critiquing :) Then, one day--we both woke up. It was about fours years ago and we were sitting around talking when we realized, we need to really focus on writing.

And Pam kicked us both into gear. We applied for an MFA together and got into the same program (we just finished this past August- woo hoo!!!) and then we signed up for writing conferences. This is where I REALLY, TRULY cherish my BWB. Pam had a discussion with an agent who told her: your writing seems more like young adult writing. Why don't you turn this story into a teen story?? Pam told me this, then said: "Hey, you usually write things in teenager's voices, too. We should BOTH write YA."
Comment 2 of 2:

Fast Forward--three years later. Pam is repped by Sarah LaPolla from Curtis Brown Ltd from her FIRST YA novel ever. And me? Well, she encourages me to keep querying, keep trekking, and revise, revise, revise. She tells me there's an agent out there for me who will love my work because it's good. Best of all? She tells me to neve, ever, ever even THINK about giving up. And because of that, she is the BWB a girl could ever ask for.

Thanks for this contest. It's one of the best I've come across in a long time :D

First of all, our blog backgrounds match :) Secondly, this is a great idea for a contest!

I met my BWB in Feb 2011, when I wanted to go to a conference and my mom (being a mother) called the coordinator and asked if teens attended. The coordinator hooked me and Kate up, and we started talking. And never stopped.

Then we met in June 2011 at that conference, and now in August, we started an editing service together. I usually just call her my business-partner-in-crime, but BWB works too. We're freakishly alike, were born 3 weeks apart, and write each other haikus like this:

I wrote a haiku
all about our awesomeness
but then it ended

Her blog is here: http://katecoursey.blogspot.com/

And mine is here: http://tarynalbright.com
My writing buddy flies under the radar – no blog, or anything like that. He’s not a professional writer, but he has three qualities that make him the best writing buddy ever. First, he is a super editor. He has an eye for seemingly small things that really disrupt continuity (and also for places where adding something small will pull a story together). Second, he’s unfailingly honest. If he likes something, I know it’s good. And third, he’s incredibly supportive. He knows when to bring out the chocolate, and when to bring out the champagne!
My writer buddy, Carol, is my chief critique partner at the moment. Even though we think alike, we pick up different aspects in each others writing which is really helpful. I enjoy critiquing her work and she recently picked up an agent. Woo hoo. My Blog

I love reading about everyone's BWBs!

My BWB is a brain, a retired doctor, but is humble and can be as silly as me when we get going. We can be brutally honest with each other. She was published by Scholastic on her first submission, a MG boys' adventure (before med school). Her WIPs are awesome, even the 1st drafts. She believes in my writing and offers insightful critiques to everyone in our critique group. Working with her is like an intense workshop & she's openminded about my wild, random ideas. She doesn't blog - yet!

What a lovely blog topic.

She's not a crit partner, but I have a friend who signs all her notes, "Suzie - who knew you when" because she insists she'll someday be at a cocktail party bragging that she knows the author of a great new book. I appreciate her confidence - even on the days it's highly misplaced!

I tweeted it! Some people think my memoir is YA, but I'm not so sure. Either way I don't have a BWB. It's just me and my computer :( Can my computer enter?
My BWB is Patti Nielson at pattinielson.blogspot.com. She's definitely read more, and offered more input, than anybody else I've shared my writing with. She lives in Canada, and I live in Texas...but maybe one day we will meet in real life:) Thanks for the contest. louderthannoise.blogspot.com
I echo everyone else who has said that this is a terrific contest! Thanks to Renee, Kristen, and Angelina—and, of course, Molly and Kate—for making it happen.

I am lucky enough to have four BWBs—the fellow members of my writers’ group. We started up nine years ago now (!!) and still meet monthly to eat a pot-luck dinner, consume copious amounts of wine, and, of course, critique each other's writing. We celebrate our successes together, support each other through the trying times, and most importantly, keep each other writing. Without them badgering me for the next installment, I’m sure that my longer projects would never have gotten finished. My first book will definitely be dedicated to them!
Hands down, my BWB is my significant other. Why? Because he's the only one that I can tell ALL the bad stuff to.

My boyfriend wants my dream to come true, he's enabling me physically to do so, and he believes it will happen (at least that's what he tells me :D).

(And he'll secretly like the best friends necklace though he'll pretend it's stupid.)

He's also very private, so he has no blog. Mine is: http://sophiathewriter.blogspot.com/
